Neighbourhood Tour — Argyll (March 1, 2008)

This neighbourhood is small, which is a good thing — seeing how I was in a rush on this day to get to Old Strathcona to see what Kevin Taft had to say.  Ah yes, the days when we thought political change was in the air — but I digress.

Onward to … Argyll!

Argyll, located at the terminus of the Mill Creek Ravine, is a post WWII era development, anchored in the north part of the neighbourhood by every cyclist’s dream: a Velodrome (which is slated to be made into an indoor track, much to the chargin of certain people in the area), a BMX track, and prime access to the River Valley via Mill Creek Ravine.

Argyll has an eviable view of downtown, considering it’s situated several kilometres away from the core.  Manulife Place rises in the background above the Community League building in the foreground.

Argyll is centrally located in South Edmonton, with quick access to services and shops.  This is apparent via the number of infill houses going up, such as the one in the photo above.  Aman Gill, by the way, did not unseat Mean Gene.  Better luck 4 years from now…

Here is the aforementioned BMX track, in hiberation for the winter.  With Spring upon us now, it will soon be back of life with riders of all ages!

Overall, the best aspect of this neighbourhood is opportunities for recreation.  Whether it is hiking alongside Mill Creek, or besting your personal best time at the Velodrome, active people will love this section of town.  If you are looking for something other than a starter home built in the 1950’s though, your only option is to either buy a dollhouse, knock it down, and build an infill, or seek out a neighbourhood like Pleasantview, where larger, more upscale houses exist.

Like all South Central Edmonton neighbourhoods though, you are never far from everything you need; thus, I recommend it, especially for first-time home buyers, and epecially for those who are active!
